While STMicroelectronics is widely recognized as a manufacturing company, it operates as a full end-to-end semiconductor supplier. Within this broad scope, OpenText solutions are specifically used for two critical domains: manufacturing enterprise solutions (MES) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

STMicroelectronics leverages OpenText Application Quality Management and OpenText Functional Testing on premises to test and validate the quality of these two critical systems.

Across these domains, STMicroelectronics manages approximately 165 active projects and applications that undergo both manual and automated testing. For automated testing, they utilize OpenText Functional Testing, which is tightly integrated with OpenText Application Quality Management.

This integration ensures seamless test execution and centralized management. OpenText Application Quality Management serves as the central hub for test management, providing a unified view of all manual and automated testing activities across applications and teams.

A key requirement for STMicroelectronics was a centralized, comprehensive reporting system, especially for global and SOX compliance reports. Their applications span various user interfaces, including GUI, API, and integration layers, and they have implemented extensive test automation across these areas. To address this, STMicroelectronics required a solution that could consolidate all testing data—manual and automated—into a single, unified dashboard for better visibility, traceability, and decision-making offered by OpenText Application Quality Management.

STMicroelectronics’ decision to migrate to the cloud aligns with its broader company strategy to modernize and streamline IT operations. Cloud-based applications offer greater flexibility, easier maintenance, and faster vendor support.

However, STMicroelectronics’s approach was selective and case-by-case; not all tools were moved to the cloud, but rather those where cloud deployment offers clear operational advantages.

Balanced cloud benefits with strategic deployment

The migration focused on 165 projects across the two key domains: manufacturing enterprise solutions (MES) and enterprise resource planning (ERP). These projects support daily testing activities, both manual and automated, with automation handled via OpenText Functional Testing, integrated tightly with OpenText Application Quality Management.

STMicroelectronics does not aim to automate everything. Automation is applied selectively, based on feasibility and value. Some scenarios remain manual due to complexity or limitations in automation capabilities.

Phased and validated migration process with OpenText™ Professional Services

STMicroelectronics partnered with OpenText Professional Services to support their transition to a public cloud environment.

The migration began with a statement of work (SOW) validation phase, involving multiple iterations and refinements over a month. A dry run was initiated in December.

The migration process offered valuable insights and opportunities for optimization. Initially, the first batch was deployed on a shared cloud platform, which demonstrated some lack of flexibility of licenses. This initial step highlighted the benefits of a more tailored solution, leading to a successful re-deployment on a dedicated cloud platform that provided enhanced licensing flexibility and scalability.

Streamlined large-scale data transfers

As part of the migration, several large projects—some exceeding 1TB—were transferred using segmented data strategies. This approach ensured efficient handling and seamless reassembly on the OpenText side, demonstrating the team’s ability to manage complex data transfers with precision into OpenText Application Quality Management.

Following the migration, the technical setup phase focused on building a robust automated testing environment. Connection between OpenText Functional Testing and the new cloud-based OpenText Application Quality Management was successfully established, ensuring smooth integration. To further enhance performance, tuning efforts were implemented, resulting in faster connection speeds and a more responsive user experience in the cloud.

Results

Despite some technical particularities, migration was successfully completed by June 2025. STMicroelectronics’s testing operations returned to full functionality within five months, with no major disruptions.

A cloud-based centralized view of both manual and automated testing

Though given the current stage of implementation, it is too early to establish any comparative operational metrics with the on-premises setup.

The cloud-based setup now offers a centralized view of both manual and automated testing, improved reporting capabilities—including support for SOX compliance—and a more scalable and maintainable infrastructure for future growth.
