Bosch’s mission of “Invented for life” reflects a continuous drive for innovation. This commitment also extends to improving internal processes, including litigation and investigative decision-making in the legal department. Bosch’s Vice President of eDiscovery, Franziska Fuchs, explained the challenges faced by the legal department, “Bosch’s core business is to develop and manufacture user-friendly, sustainable products that improve quality of life and conserve natural resources. Any legal challenges we face—and as a large company, legal challenges are an inevitable part of doing business—are a distraction to this. We want to resolve disputes as quickly as possible so that our attention and funds can be focused on innovation.”
In any legal dispute, understanding the data early and deeply is crucial but challenging. If the legal department could uncover relevant information and supporting evidence much earlier in the process, it would help ensure data-driven legal and business decisions. Fuchs knew that technology could help Bosch make better and faster decisions by quickly processing and analyzing large amounts of internal data. The resulting knowledge can then shape how a legal case proceeds.
Given the high stakes and long-term nature of legal cases, Bosch looked for a reliable technology partner, focused on consistent delivery and innovation. Fuchs added, “Technological innovation in our legal practice could reduce costs and improve efficiency, even if it doesn’t shorten the legal process itself.”

OpenText™ eDiscovery Aviator leverages years of AI development to process large datasets and reduce the time and effort needed to understand legal cases. The Bosch legal team, working with OpenText Aviator Lab team, used GenAI to analyze historical cases involving millions of documents and thousands of terabytes. Fuchs said, “As a test, we fed one of our big data sets into the AI foundation model, to review an old case and ask pertinent questions. It would show us accurately where relevant information resided within the data set and pull up the actual document. Following that very promising first step, we saw the potential quite clearly.”
“OpenText eDiscovery Aviator is what the future of AI looks like for the legal industry,” added Fuchs. “We use it to crunch vast data sets in the case assessment phase. We then use a large language model to ask the relevant questions and get answers within minutes that will determine our case strategy.”
Bosch embraced AI and actively promotes education through hackathons, training, and brainstorming sessions. Legal teams learn to integrate AI into everyday tasks, shifting from manual review to strategic decision-making. The team understands that managing large datasets like this can uncover insights human eyes might miss and lets them focus on questions that determine case outcomes.
For a global organization, language support is a challenge for document review. OpenText eDiscovery can translate documents from virtually any language into any other. According to Fuchs, “[OpenText] eDiscovery’s machine translation capabilities have been a game-changer.... It allows us to manage multilingual reviews much faster and more efficiently without relying on costly, scarce human translators. This capability alone saved us time without sacrificing service quality.”
OpenText eDiscovery Visualizer provides a user-friendly display of potentially relevant content, with key indicators and criteria clearly presented, to facilitate fast and accurate review. “[OpenText] transforms data into digestible visuals. This helps convey complex insights to decision makers, making it easier to understand and act on the information, or paint a picture of the story residing in the data,” said Fuchs.
As the team became familiar with the solution, Fuchs realized it applied to use cases outside of their direct realm. Facing a product shortage, the team devised a creative solution. They set up a mailbox integrated with OpenText eDiscovery to track communications. Running data through the system, they visualized communication flows, including frequency and responses. They identified and reminded stakeholders who were not communicating about the component shortage in real time. This approach was not part of the standard legal process, but the solution was easily adapted.

Fuchs commented, “It is important that legal teams maintain direct control over eDiscovery processes, rather than outsourcing this to external counsel. For us, it is vitally important to collaborate closely with OpenText, so that we can align legal strategies with the technical capabilities available in the solution.
