Discovery Suite Overview

Unlike "Big Data" which is primarily generated by machines, people, not machines are creating content at unprecedented rates and volumes. Today's knowledge workers generate more than 80 percent of the information found in the enterprise in the form documents, spreadsheets, presentations, email, collaboration and media. This unstructured content does share two important characteristics with Big Data. Firstly, it is big. The volume of content being created and stored by organizations is doubling every two years. Secondly, there is a desire to extract and protect value in this content. This "Big Content" represents the sum of the collaboration, intellectual property, competitive advantage, and expertise in the organization. Unfortunately, it also represents all of the detritus, outdated and duplicated information that exists within every organization. The problem organizations face is how to quickly find value in their "Big Content".

Organizations that can solve "Big Content" problems will benefit by being able to separate what is valuable from content that is valueless. Through enriching and providing better access to the valuable content, its value can be amplified to improve productivity, collaboration, customer engagement and innovation. The valueless can be managed to reduce risk and cost.

OpenText Discovery Suite accelerates time to value for Big Content

Big Content problems can be summarized as the three U's. Big Content is unintegrated, unstructured and unmanaged. Discovery Suite addresses these problems by:

  • Eliminating silos with a Unified Information Access Platform for Enterprise content and content sources
  • Bringing structure to the unstructured with content analytics to normalize and enrich metadata
  • Managing content and making content smarter with problem-specific unified information applications

Discovery applications enable organizations to accelerate time to value – and transform one of their biggest problems into their most valuable asset.

Solutions for Big Content

Discovery technologies and applications help solve some of the biggest challenges organizations face due to the deluge of electronic information created, consumed, and stored today.

Organizations struggle to derive any value and cannot control the cost and risk of the Big Content their knowledge workers create every day. More than just a size problem, Big Content is unintegrated, unstructured, and unmanaged.

Unintegrated: The number of applications and repositories that create and store unstructured information is growing alarmingly within the enterprise. This, combined with a perception at the end user level that there is no cost to hoarding information means that unstructured content is found on desktops, fileservers, archives, email systems, document management systems, ERP and increasingly in social media application and the cloud.

OpenText Discovery Suite eliminates these silos with a Unified Information Access Platform for Enterprise Sources and content. The Discovery Platform has connectors for critical Enterprise applications and it processes and indexes document found in the enterprise. It also provides a rich library of UI components and API’s so that search applications can be rapidly developed.

Unstructured: In order to have the confidence to act on information, whether that be delete, migrate or base an important decision on the latest version of a document, it is necessary to understand and find the content.

OpenText Discovery Suite uses content analytics to bring structured to the unstructured. It extracts semantic information from content and applies it as structured metadata. Semantic metadata includes people, places, organizations, complex concepts and even sentiment. This, combined with file metadata and permissions metadata, provides a way to query and organize unstructured information in ways not possible before.

Unmanaged: Big Content, more than anything else is unmanaged. It is not managed from a risk and cost perspective, and it is not managed from the perspective of mining the huge potential found in Big Content. In order to do so, business logic and process needs to be applied to solve very specific problems or use cases.

OpenText Discovery Suite has applications to manage specific Big Content problems that organizations struggle to solve every day. Some of Information Governance use cases include auto-classification of content, collection and early case assessment for eDiscovery, remediation and migration to control the lifecycle of content. Some of the engagement and productivity use cases include site search, intranet and extranet search applications. Critically, these applications have a clear and demonstrable ROI based on the problems they solve or the use case they enable.
