American Welding Society Implements Open Text's Livelink for Collaboration
Livelink Helps Industry Committees Work Together Online, Improve Productivity — Meetings in Real Time with Livelink MeetingZone
Chicago, Il - 2004-03-02 - Open Text™ Corporation (Nasdaq: OTEX, TSX: OTC), provider of Livelink®, the leading collaboration and content management software for the global enterprise, said today that the American Welding Society (AWS) has implemented a solution based on Livelink Enterprise Server to manage online collaboration for the organization’s working committees.

AWS is the welding industry's largest professional association. It serves 50,000 members worldwide, including engineers, scientists, educators, researchers, welders, inspectors and welding foremen. Founded in 1919 and based in Miami, Florida, AWS leads the industry in providing education, safety standards, and technology development to advance welding and "materials-joining" practices in factories, high-rise construction, military weaponry, and consumer products.

The organization has adopted Livelink for Collaboration’s collaborative workspaces and content-and-document-management capabilities to help its many member committees manage committee processes in real time and asynchronously. Key collaboration tools that AWS is using include team workspaces, online meetings via Livelink MeetingZone™, discussion forums, and polling. Livelink also serves as a central repository for the creation and publishing of documents and other content developed by the committees.

"We were looking for a software solution that would help speed the standards-development process, a key function of the role we play in the industry,” said Andrew Davis, Managing Director, Technical Services Division, at AWS. “Livelink for Collaboration is well suited for standards development or any organizational activity that requires employees, customers, volunteers, and other individuals to exchange ideas, agree on details, and develop consensus. We look forward to using the system to the benefit of our volunteers, our membership, and our standards customers. Already, we have received positive feedback from several committee members who have been exposed to the system. They are pleased with its features."

Livelink for Collaboration provides a series of tools specifically designed to help AWS manage its committees, including committee templates with features such as pre-defined committee structures and configurable terminology. The templates help AWS create a best-practices approach to establishing new committees, and ensure consistent processes, structure and ground rules for each committee. Livelink for Collaboration also lets committees define roles and responsibilities for members, and administer permissions to content in the workspace and other details for each participant.

"For major industry associations, the difficulty of connecting over long distances often delays the global collaboration that is necessary among their key standards or governing committees," said Mike Farrell, Executive Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing. "AWS recognizes this as a challenge and has taken a major step forward to make collaboration easier. Livelink for Collaboration is well-suited to the task."
