IMC and Open Text Connect NIDA Researchers for Drug Treatment Breakthroughs
Web-based Technology Solution Supports Agency Testing "Real-Life" Treatments
McLean, VA and Chicago, IL - 2002-01-22 - Information Management Consultants, Inc. (IMC), a leading provider of e-Business solutions, and Open Text™ Corporation (Nasdaq: OTEX, TSE: OTC), today announced that Open Text's Livelink® technology is being used to enhance the National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network. IMC's selection of Livelink will enable greater collaboration and more effective communication throughout NIDA.

As part of the National Institutes of Health, NIDA's mission is to lead the Nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction. In support of its mission, NIDA established a nationwide Clinical Trials Network. A structured partnership of NIDA treatment researchers and community-based service providers, the NIDA Clinical Trials Network is aimed at cooperatively developing, refining, and delivering new treatment options to patients in community-level clinical settings.

Livelink provides key services needed for the Clinical Trials Network to effectively collaborate nation-wide as multi-site clinical trials are designed and conducted. The Livelink document repository enables:

  • electronic filing of documents in a shared workspace, providing controlled access to research throughout the protocol development process;
  • version control through a secure interface, supporting document review and download; and,
  • access to documents for review and comment in a discussion area, eliminating the need for travel and effectively increasing efficiency and timeliness of communication.

"Ideas for study in the Clinical Trials Network are generated through collaboration among research scientists and treatment service providers," said Jim Glass, Chief of Informatics, NIDA. "The use of collaborative knowledge management technology will greatly improve chances that successful research projects address current needs and are quickly disseminated across the service delivery sector to become part of standard treatments."

"IMC's implementation of Livelink as the underlying technology platform for the Clinical Trials Network provides an extranet framework for maintaining collaborative relationships between researchers throughout the United States. The collective knowledge of top researchers in the United States can work together to propel drug treatment breakthroughs," said John Shackleton, President, Open Text.

The Clinical Trials Network operates through affiliations with Yale University, University of Pennsylvania, New York University, Oregon Health Sciences University, The Regents of the University of California, and The Johns Hopkins University.

"IMC has over 20 years of document management, workflow, and networking experience in both the public and private sectors," said Suresh Shenoy, Executive Vice President, IMC. "The government is looking to take steps toward transforming their networks and information systems to a more collaborative model. By selecting Open Text's Livelink product, IMC provides a collaborative environment among Clinical Trial Network personnel, furthering the public good through government sponsored healthcare research."
