Ocean Conservancy is a non-profit organization with over 500,000 members that coordinate an International Coastal Cleanup effort every September. During this cleanup, thousands of volunteers count the amount of debris and trash that are collected from lakes, rivers, streams and oceans documenting the experience through photos and data. Previously, this information was uploaded via email or FTP to Ocean Conservancy from the event which was then eventually given to the media that covered the story. Ocean Conservancy also hired outside photographers from Aurora Photography to catalog and take pictures of the cleanup efforts and those photos would also be added to the system.
Ocean Conservancy implemented Open Text Media Management on Demand (MMOD) in 2009 to help manage the photos and data and to create a secure centralized system that was easily accessible and user-friendly. Previously there was no centralized system to edit, upload and organize the photos from members and photographers from around the world. Dove Coggeshall, Director of Online Communications at Ocean Conservancy, concluded that if they were able to implement a centralized system it would allow the staff to edit photos as they are uploaded which would save time and money, while increasing the response time to get the photos to the news agencies.
Coggeshall assigned one person from her team to work with Open Text. They began to train staff and the photographers from Aurora Photography on how the system worked. After implementation, Coggeshall said that MMOD was a huge time savings for the organization and that staff was able to upload images that they needed for meetings, reports and presentations.
Open Text MMOD has provided Ocean Conservancy with a centralized repository that securely manages all of the organization's digital assets, including those created around the world during the 2009 International Coastal Cleanup. "With Open Text, we have anytime, anywhere access to our digital content." states Coggeshall.
