OTSW FAQ
Like any good product team, we love to talk about Social Workplace’s value and the impact it can have on your organization. We know you have some technical questions too, and here are the answers to the most common questions we get.
1. What kind of environment does it run in?
Social Workplace is well designed to run either in the cloud or on a 64bit Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2008 in your Ops Center.
2. What kind of hardware does it require to run? Hardware requirements range from Stand Alone servers, to VMWare Virtualization environments.
- For a small (1000) person system? Four CPU cores with 16 Gigs of Ram
- For a medium (5000) person system? 6 CPU cores with 24 Gigs of Ram
- For a large (100,000) person system? 8 CPU cores with 32 Gigs of Ram
3. What kind of security do you support?
- Passwords - Passwords are stored in an encrypted form in the OTSW Network Store using a secure encryption algorithm. Logins are protected using standard password masking. Directory Integration is available to allow userid/password validation against an Active Directory or LDAP server.
- Access - Only accessible to validated users, not publicly available. Connection is securable using an SSL certificate to encrypt communications. For a more detailed description of security options in OTSW, please click here to read our Security White Paper.
- Secure Socket (optional) - OTSW supports for SSL Certificates to be applied to secure the http traffic.
4. What kind of permissions and accessibility control is there?
- User groups - The Users can be assigned to User groups, that can be used to define the permissions of users within the system. These permissions can be controlled at the User group level, or defined more granularly at the Community level. This allows the Custodian to have access allowed/denied upon the creation of the community.
- Community types - There are 4 types by default:
-Public: Everyone can join, see and create content in this community
-Public (read only): Everyone can join and see the content in this community
-Private: Only members can see content, people can request to join the community
-Secret: Hidden comunity where you can invite members to join the community
These can be modified & new ones created with different permission sets, such as:
-Public (read only): Customers, Partners, Staff can join & see community content
-Public: Customers, Partners & Staff can join and create content in this community
-Open to Staff: Any staff member can join and create content in this community
-Private: Only members can see content, only Staff can join the community
-Secret: Hidden community where Staff can invite members to join the community
5. Do you integrate with Active Directory?
Social Workplace offers support for directory synchronization and external authentication to Active Directory. With Directory Services installed and configured, Active Directory user changes in the Active Directory are mirrored back in to Open Text Social Workplace. When a user authenticates to OTSW the credentials are passed on to the Active Directory for authentication.
6. What about content server?
Open Text Social Workplace currently integrates with Open Text Content Server using Web Services.
7. What about Sharepoint?
Open Text Social Workplace can be part of a Sharepoint portal and environment.
8. What is the API like?
Social Workplace has a server level REST API that can access with Open Text Social Workplace (OTSW) while respecting user permissions and roles. It uses HTTP and JSON for platform independence. It supports viewing, editing, updating and creating content. The server level API also supports such tasks as follow, flag and search. A common integration example creating a is Intranet/Portal applet or portlet that gives users change notifications, or Windows Sidebar gadgets OTSW also has a client side Java Script Library. This API is primarily to allow for easy addition and extension of the types of content displayed within Social Workplace or to facilitate "discuss in Social Workplace" integration in other web sites/applications.
9. Does it support Single Sign On or external authentication?
OTSW Directory supports both external authentication and directory synchronization of users with an external directory such as Microsoft Active Directory. The API supports a ticketing system that allows for an SSO solution to be put in place. OTSW does not support any SSO standard out of the box.
10. What are the specifics of the hosted environment (sites, infrastructure, SLA)?
Open Text offers a secure Hosted SAAS model that is available to customers that which for their systems and data to live in the "cloud".
11. Is it integrated with other OT products?
Open Text Social Workplace currently integrates with Open Text Content Server using Web Services.
12. What browsers are supported?

The dagger symbol (as in "Firefox 3.†") indicates that the most-current non-beta version at that branch level receives support.
13. Which mobile devices are supported?
Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, RIM BlackBerry.
14. Which DBMS is supported?
N/A. Open Text Social Workplace uses its own proprietary DBMS designed.
