Open Text Search Technology to Power PDR® Electronic Library on CD-ROM
San Mateo, CA - 1996-10-22 - Open Text Corporation (OTEX:NASDAQ)
of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada today announced that it had licensed its
textual search and retrieval technology to Physician's Desk Reference, a
property of Medical Economics Company Inc. of Montvale, New Jersey.
Medical Economics, a division of The Thomson Corporation providing
healthcare information products and services, will incorporate Open Text
search technology into its highly-regarded PDR® Electronic Library(TM) on
CD-ROM, the reference source of choice for physicians and healthcare
professionals.
"After evaluating the leading search engines available on the market today,
we found Open Text's search technology able to outperform its competitors
in the areas of speed, ease of integration and support of SGML," said
Edward J. Zecchini, VP and CIO of Medical Economics. "For our users it
provides the ability to quickly search the large volumes of information we
package into our PDR Electronic Library on CD-ROM."
The first CD-ROMs containing Open Text search technology are expected
to be released in January 1997.
"We're pleased to be providing a key competitive advantage to Medical
Economics, helping them provide a premier information management
solution to their customers," said Tom Jenkins, President and CEO of
Open Text Corporation. "The same search technology that we're
integrating with data products from Medical Economics powers our Livelink
Search product, which recently took top honors in Computerworld's review
of intranet-ready search engines. So this can be viewed as a significant
OEM integration of our technology," Jenkins added.
