Open Text's Livelink to Enable Schein Pharmaceutical's Document Management Move to the Web
Waterloo, ON - 1996-12-05 - Open Text Corporation
(OTEX:NASDAQ) today announced that generic drug manufacturer Schein
Pharmaceutical of Florham Park, New Jersey, has chosen the Livelink
Intranet suite to form the basis of an electronic document management
system.
In the first stage of the project, Schein's existing document base,
comprised of numerous word processing and data formats, will be copied
into the Livelink Library or repository, residing on a MS Windows NT
server. Users will be able to access documents via a standard web
browser and check them in and out of a central repository. In the second
stage, Livelink's ability to manage collaborative projects across the
enterprise will be enabled.
"Initially we saw Open Text's Livelink suite as primarily a proven intranet
solution for document management," said Rick Lyons, Manager, Special
Projects IS, Schein Pharmaceutical. "The flexibility of the suite is
incredible and very price competitive, given that other, traditional document
management solutions require additional client software alongside the
server software.
"But we're equally excited about exploiting the full benefits of the Livelink
Intranet suite as they relate to better team and project management and
interaction, using Livelink's Workflow and Team Collaboration modules,"
Lyons added. "Once the basic system is installed and users are
comfortable with 'going to the web' rather than their filing cabinets, we'll
look at the management of critical business processes using the real time
benefits of the Livelink implementation of intranet groupware."
The Livelink-based content management system is supplementing
paper-based manual systems and will allow users easy, shared access to
the hundreds of documents that a federally regulated firm like Schein must
generate, amend, distribute and store.
"We've experienced growing interest from firms like Schein Pharmaceutical
and others that want to use intranets to manage collaborative,
business-critical processes. These organizations include those developing
products that must comply with regulatory standards; managing
globally-distributed documents (such as engineering) or developing
standard operating procedures that need to be made accessible across
the enterprise," said Tom Jenkins, president and CEO, Open Text
Corporation.
Initially, 150 users will be on the system at the corporate headquarters in
Florham, and Schein anticipates that an extended roll-out to facilities in
Carmel, New York; Cherry Hill, New Jersey and Phoenix, Arizona will see
a further 600 employees of a total of 1,100 added to the system by year
end 1997.
"I envision many uses for Livelink, just one example being an aid to help
our International Marketing Group take existing dossiers, that have been
approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, and easily and quickly
renewing these dossiers to file with overseas regulatory authorities, who
require different but not completely original material," says Lyons.
Schein Pharmaceutical is a leading developer, manufacturer and seller of
generic drugs to the managed health care industry.
