Netscape and Open Text Partner to Provide Web-Based Document Management
Netscape to Bundle Open Text Livelink Intranet with Netscape® SuiteSpot
San Jose, CA - 1997-06-11 - - Open Text Corporation
(NASDAQ:OTEX) and Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:
NSCP) today announced that Netscape will bundle Open Text Livelink
Intranet, a leading Web-based document management and business
process application with Netscape® SuiteSpot integrated family of server
software.
Livelink - which integrates enterprise document management, workflow,
searching and Web project capabilities - will be accessible directly through
Netscape Communicator Client Software without the need for proprietary
plug-ins or extensions. A Livelink workgroup license will be bundled with
Netscape SuiteSpot.
"The combination of Open Text Livelink with Netscape SuiteSpot will help
bring business applications to intranets and extranets," said Eric Hahn,
Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Server Product Division
at Netscape. "Customers deploying Netscape SuiteSpot servers and using
Livelink can take advantage of advanced Web-based document
management."
"As intranets become the de facto standard for how organizations develop
and deploy applications worldwide, it is important that Netscape establish
a framework for managing documents and work processes on a truly open
and vast scale," said Tom Jenkins, President and CEO of Open Text. "By
bundling Livelink, a market leader in Web-based document management
with Netscape SuiteSpot, Netscape delivers a framework for advanced
Web-based document management on intranets and extranets."
"The Netscape and Open Text partnership creates a powerful combination
that brings an advanced Web-based document management solution to
companies looking to further leverage their intranet investment," said Ian
Campbell, Director, International Data Corporation. "Our recent analysis (1)
of the Web-based document management market clearly indicated that
Open Text was a pioneer in this new class of application designed for the
delivery of mission-critical business applications over the Web."
Livelink is a rich integrated application that leverages Netscape SuiteSpot
servers. For example, Livelink's innovative Change Agents technology
works with Netscape Messaging Server, Netscape Directory Server,
Netscape Enterprise Server and Netscape Certificate Server software to
monitor key areas of Livelink, such as workflow status, document versions,
project spaces, and notify users of key information and business process
changes based on user-defined schedules and preferences.
Livelink is the Market Leader in Web-Based Document Management
As recognized by a recent IDC survey, Open Text is the leading vendor in
Web-based document management software with a commanding 64% of
the market.(2) Livelink has approximately 1/4 million users after only one
year of introduction. This compares very favorably with a Gartner Group
report that estimates that after 10 years the total client/server document
management market is 1.5 million users. Gartner Group further predicts
that the document management market will grow to 30 million users by
2001; a 75% CAGR.(3)
Livelink Complements SuiteSpot Functionality; Deepens Users' Ability to
Build and Manage Business Processes in Intranets and Extranets "Unlike
other solutions offered for document management and business
processes, Livelink is not a tool set but rather a customizable
out-of-the-box application with a rich set of features that are used directly
through a Web browser," added Jenkins. "That means that CIOs have
instant client-side deployments by simply sending an email with the
appropriate Web address to their staff. This is one of the principal reasons
for the rapid adoption and growth of Livelink in contrast to the slow and
expensive deployment of client/server based document management
solutions. Livelink fulfills the promise of the Web and intranets to
revolutionize the way companies work."
According to Bill Zoellick, Director for Document Software Strategies at
CAP Ventures, "All of our market research points to a major shift in the
way that companies are using document management systems. The focus
is no longer on just solving a 'document problem,' but on using document
management to tie together the entire business. Netscape and Open Text
are picking up on this momentum and accelerating it, combining two very
popular products into an off-the-shelf solution for something the market is
clearly demanding. It's a powerful offer."
Netscape/Open Text Solution Adopted in Many Applications and Industries
Combined with Netscape SuiteSpot, Livelink has already been adopted by
many of the largest intranet deployments. Livelink and Netscape SuiteSpot
will continue this collaboration and enhance the ability of major
corporations to collaborate and manage critical business processes, such
as human resources, project management, product development,
regulatory procedures, technical documentation, and customer service,
that involve documents and inter-related groups involving thousands of
users. Netscape and Open Text have been deployed in a number of vertical
markets, including:
Telecommunications
Manufacturing
Energy
Aerospace
Process Manufacturing
Services
Pharmaceutical/Biotechnology
