First-of-its-Kind Service Uses Load Simulation to Deliver Highest Computing Power and Increased ROI for Large-Scale Intranet Deployments
Chicago, IL - 1998-05-13 - -- Furthering its position as the leading
provider of enterprise knowledge management applications, Open Text
Corporation (NASDAQ:OTEX) today announced the Livelink Scalability
Lab, an innovative service designed to support Global 2000 companies to
scale their Livelink applications to tens of thousands of users and
terabytes of information across distributed environments.
"Scalability is one of the most crucial components in a fully-functional
knowledge management solution," said David Yockelson, Vice President
and Service Director, Advanced Information Management Strategies,
META Group. "A lab dedicated to determining scalability prerequisites
provides companies with the optimum configurations and requirements to
meet the needs of large-scale deployments."
This first-of-its-kind service provides customers with a complete site
analysis to establish performance goals and identify required hardware,
database management systems, user profiles, intranet objectives and
security needs. Armed with this information, Open Text simulates an
environment in the Livelink Scalability Lab that matches both the
customer s existing and future requirements and performs a series of tests
to stress all areas of Livelink. This process yields a set of guidelines for
deploying, managing, and monitoring Livelink in the customer s actual
environment.
"Research from the Livelink Scalability Lab has led to the successful
scaling of enterprise-wide installations of Livelink at leading global 2000
companies such as Ford and Motorola," said Abe Kleinfeld, Senior
Vice-President, Marketing, Open Text Corporation. "The Livelink Scalability
Lab takes the guesswork out of enterprise deployments by leveraging
Open Text s considerable experience with many successful, world-class
implementations."
The Livelink Scalability Lab employs Open Text s Livelink Cluster Architecture (LCA), a load-balanced and highly available architecture for uninterrupted service and high performance across multiple, heavily accessed servers. The LCA balances the load of incoming network requests and protects critical information services through monitoring, restarting, failing over, and automatic recovery of all critical components. High availability is achieved through automatic failure detection and elimination of single failure points. As enterprises begin large-scale intranet-application deployments, security becomes paramount. In addition to nine levels of access control within Livelink, down to the object level, the LCA offers a modular architecture that physically separates the Livelink servers and databases, providing an extensible framework for integrating with enterprise security solutions. This is accomplished by treating Livelink as a separate application within the overall enterprise information security model.
Environments of up to 50,000 workflows, millions of documents and tens of thousands of end-users have been successfully tested in the Livelink Scalability Lab. A large number of simulations, on a variety of platforms and configurations have demonstrated the near linear scalability of Livelink, and provide benchmarks for estimating the resource requirements for any size enterprise.
