CARE Canada Uses Livelink to Manage Global Social Change Via Extranet

Livelink enables globally-dispersed Non-Governmental Organizations to share best practices

Waterloo, ON - 1998-10-20 - Open Text Corporation (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSE:OTC) announced today that CARE Canada, a member of CARE International, one of the world's largest non-governmental development organizations (NGOs), is implementing Livelink to share best practices among other NGOs around the world. CARE International allocates $400 million to $600 million in aid every year for emergency relief, rehabilitation, as well as sustained development projects globally.

CARE Canada's implementation of Livelink is two-tiered. First, CARE used Livelink to establish an intranet, managing program implementation and best practices for employees. Secondly, with assistance from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA/ACDI), the 'i2K - Information to Knowledge' division of CARE Canada uses Livelink to facilitate a global extranet, enabling not only CARE employees, but also other NGOs, donors and contributors from all over the world, in even the most remote locations, to have access to best practices.

As part of the process of implementing new long-term development programs, CARE collects standard indicators from its programs around the world. These indicators track the results from CARE programs, such as records of the number of people trained, how many new businesses were started, or how many children improved in health as a result of CARE program activities. Livelink provides secure global access to the indicators and the information is used to generate best practice reports and proposals for new development projects.

"Livelink enables us to improve the quality of the work NGOs do in the Third World," said Gerard van der Burg, Director of i2K. "For example, Livelink will allow CARE to share best practice information about a CIDA/ACDI funded Agricultural Training program that we have implemented in Kenya. We post indicators of problems and solutions that occur during this project in the Livelink repository and other agricultural programs all over the world are able to access this knowledge to improve their own programs."

"CARE was looking for a solution that could be easily deployed across a geographically-dispersed base of users, yet powerful and secure enough to facilitate a global extranet," said Abe Kleinfeld, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Open Text Corporation. "More and more global companies are benefiting from Livelink's integrated support for both intranet and extranet deployment, further building Livelink's market leadership position as the industry standard for collaborative knowledge management solutions."

CARE is also working in partnership with Open Text Livelink Affinity Partner MODEL Technologies Inc., a software company that specializes in knowledge and information mapping tools, to develop LINK - a knowledge linking application. LINK leverages CARE and its sponsors' investments by providing intelligent access to the entire corporate knowledge base.

MODEL chose to work with Open Text and use Livelink because they are in the forefront of knowledge management with their unique product offerings," said Henry Lewkowicz, President of MODEL Technologies. "LINK's emphasis is on projects and integrating all the features and attributes of knowledge management (search, documents, workflow, and people). The unique openness of Livelink's architecture provides a framework to develop value-added products and custom-tailored solutions."
