MicroPatent LLC Improves Patent Research with Open Text's Livelink Discovery Server

Chicago, IL. - 2004-03-29 - Open Text Corporation (Nasdaq: OTEX, TSX: OTC), provider of Livelink®, the leading collaboration and content management software for the global enterprise, today announced that MicroPatent® LLC, the world s leading intellectual property information-management solution provider, selected Livelink Discovery Server, Open Text s search, retrieval, and discovery software. MicroPatent is using Livelink Discovery Server s advanced search and retrieval features to enhance the company s world-class patent research and analysis offerings.

A leading provider of worldwide patent content and advanced IP analytics, MicroPatent houses the world s largest commercial database of patent information, with over 50 million records from 72 countries. It offers both full-text and front-page patent data, in addition to sophisticated visualization tools, file histories, trademark data, professional research services, and consulting engagements.

MicroPatent's relationship with Open Text recently expanded with the purchase of an additional 2,000 Discovery Server user licenses which it used to develop and deploy a distributed search environment. MicroPatent's solution spans several search servers, contains millions of patent documents, and dramatically improves the performance of its patent search products.

MicroPatent is also using Open Text's concept extraction and clustering technology to offer expanded search capabilities such as the popular "Find Similar" function. "Find Similar" is a concept search tool that extracts words from one or more source documents, constructs a query, re-runs it against the millions of records within MicroPatent's PatSearch FullText database, and ranks the results by relevancy, thereby giving the user additional results related to the initial query.

"We have been working with Open Text for a number of years, and have been satisfied with their full-text search products," said Mike Baycroft, MicroPatent's CIO. "Our development team's integration of the additional Open Text licenses netted significant improvements in the speed and performance of patent searching within our applications."

"The volume and complexity of content that patent and trademark research services must maintain is enormous," said David Schubmehl, Vice President of Discovery Products at Open Text. "Being able to provide tools to find knowledge and content quickly and effortlessly is essential to being competitive in this industry. MicroPatent clearly recognizes that fact and has been on the leading edge of embracing the latest search, retrieval, and discovery technology."

Livelink Discovery Server enables organizations to manage large-scale information retrieval challenges using state-of-the-art search functionality, including query processing, search federation, text analysis, concept mining, result clustering, and categorization.
