IDC Names Open Text As The Market Share Leader By Revenue In Enterprise-Centric Electronic Document Management
International Data Corporation Report Says Open Text is Significantly Ahead of the Competition
Waterloo, ON - 1998-12-28 - Open Text Corporation (NASDAQ:OTEX; TSE:OTC) is the market share leader in enterprise-centric electronic document management (EDM) software revenue, according to an International Data Corporation (IDC) study released today. The report, Document Management Software: Mid-Year Market Review, 1998, shows that Open Text captured 42.1 per cent of the enterprise-centric EDM software revenue as of mid-year 1998.
"Open Text's electronic document management growth is fueled by its ability to offer users the tools needed to collaborate, create and disseminate information to a vast audience both within and outside an enterprise," said Amie White, Senior Analyst, Document Image and Workflow Management, IDC, the author of the report.
IDC defines enterprise-centric EDM applications as providing a default application environment for document creation, collaboration and publication to users across an organization. IDC predicts that the market opportunity for enterprise-centric EDM will be considerable in the coming year. As of mid-year 1998, Open Text captured the largest share of revenues, with 42.1 per cent. This builds on a previous IDC report (#14869), issued at the end of 1997, which named Open Text the market share leader measured by number of installed seats, or users, with 42.7 per cent market share and a 48.5 per cent share of new user growth.
"IDC's new market share numbers illustrate that our market share by revenue reflects our" market share by seats. This demonstrates the importance of Open Text's Web-based collaborative knowledge management solutions to Global 2000 enterprises around the world," said Tom Jenkins, CEO of Open Text. "IDC's report shows the great progress we have made in implementing our strategy of making collaborative document management or knowledge management solutions available across huge Web-based networks. Our recently announced worldwide deployment at Nortel Networks and our earlier announcements at companies such as Ford Motor Company and Motorola are all examples of massive enterprise-centric EDM deployments of Livelink. These early adopters are a good indication of the future of this sector of the market."
Customer wins in the first half of 1998 which contributed to Open Text's market leadership position include Sitel Worldwide, Unisys, Nissan Finance, Bell Atlantic, CVS, First USA Bank, F. Hoffman LaRoche, HJ Heinz, QUALCOMM, UK House of Commons and Silicon Graphics. Existing accounts contributing to revenues included GTE, Nortel, Swiss Bank, United Airlines, British Broadcasting Corporation, Hewlett Packard, Lockheed Martin, Steelcase and many others.
