U.S. Army Selects BearingPoint and Open Text to Deploy Worldwide Training Portal for 42,000 Medics

McLean, VA, and Boston, MA - 2003-04-24 - BearingPoint, Inc. (NYSE:BE), one of the world's largest business consulting and systems integration firms, and Open Text Corp.'s (NASDAQ:OTEX, TSX:OTC) Corechange division, a global provider of enterprise portal software, today announced that they have been selected by the United States Army to customize and deploy a worldwide training portal for 42,000 Army medics.

The portal, known as 91W after the classification of medics who have advanced training in nursing and combat medicine, will be powered by Coreport, a portal framework developed by Open Text's Corechange division, and based on Microsoft server technology. BearingPoint is responsible for the strategy, design, and implementation of the portal.

The portal will provide medics, officers, and other army personnel with secure and personalized, role-based access to content, applications, services, and productivity tools. By utilizing the 91W portal, medics across the globe can review training materials, search medical cases, and communicate with instructors and trainees. Medics and trainees also will access the 91W portal through Army Knowledge Online (AKO), a Web site serving more than one million military personnel.

"This is a ground-breaking project for us," said Colonel Frederick E. Gerber, U.S. Army Medical Service. "The 91W portal will help the U.S. Army achieve its goal of increasing medical readiness."

Under the contract, BearingPoint will integrate existing and future medical education documents, content, applications, and services. The portal will provide a single homepage for 91W medics that will deliver all medical training throughout their term of service, helping the Army reach its goal of cross training its entire field of medics. The portal, which was designed by BearingPoint, employs an innovative graphical user interface, modeled after a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter cockpit.

"BearingPoint is proud to play an integral part in the development and deployment of the 91W portal," said Tim Pavlick, a managing director with BearingPoint's federal services group. "The portal allows BearingPoint to bring together a variety of technologies, such as XML, wireless, middleware, and Microsoft's Active Directory into one integrated solution. The Corechange platform provides a single framework to integrate these advanced capabilities."

"This portal solution will be used by the entire Army Medical Department enterprise to help improve the capabilities of the combat medic team," said Mitra Azizirad, general manager, Microsoft Federal Systems. "The result is the creation of a more capable and ready combat medic who is better able to support today's modern warfighter. We are honored to support such an endeavor."

The Coreport technology will allow the Army to rapidly deploy a single enterprise portal to serve all stakeholders effectively and securely. Unlike other software applications and platforms that have adopted or added on a portal, the Coreport portal framework was designed from the beginning to address enterprise requirements: a growing numbers of users, multiple devices, and proliferating content sources, as well as changing organizational priorities and the need to make better use of existing IT resources.

"The deployment of Coreport within BearingPoint's solution for the U.S. Army proves clearly how Coreport's role-based architecture can scale to meet the needs of a significant number of end users the 42,000 medics who will use the 91W portal," said Bill Forquer, senior vice president of business development at Open Text. "In addition, this deployment demonstrates the synergy between our technology and the solutions provided by BearingPoint, which boasts a solid track record in deploying technology for the federal government."

The portal was designed and tested in a pilot mode late last year. It will be moved to an Army hosting environment within the next 60 days, where the portal will be scaled to accommodate 42,000 medics.
