U.S. National Archives and Records Administration Selects Open Text and Impact Innovations
Livelink-based Application to Save Time in Locating National Resources
Chicago, IL. - 2002-12-12 - Open Text Corporation (Nasdaq: OTEX, TSX: OTC), provider of Livelink®, the leading collaboration and knowledge management software for the global enterprise, and Impact Innovations Group today announced their joint efforts in developing a Livelink-based application for the United States National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The application, called the Master Location Register (MLR), has been specifically created for tracking information about the storage location of a significant segment of the important archival records in NARA's custody.
An independent federal agency, NARA oversees the management of all federal records and ensures ready access to essential information. By identifying, protecting, and helping people to use the invaluable records of America's past, NARA plays a unique and central role in preserving the U.S. nation's history and democratic traditions.
"One of the primary requirements for developing the MLR was that we needed to identify and utilize a commercially available technology with components demonstrated to be both functional and extensible," said Jay Eigenbrode, Project Manager, National Archives and Records Administration. "After a substantive market search, Livelink was clearly the best suited for meeting our requirements."
Internal to NARA, the MLR places key information regarding the location of archived items at the fingertips of NARA staff. The MLR leverages Livelink's secure information retrieval to enable NARA to enhance customer service and respond more quickly and efficiently to inquiries from government agencies and members of the public.
NARA archivists will utilize the Livelink-based MLR to locate and track the physical movement of textual holdings in its two primary locations. Buildings in Washington, DC and College Park, MD house in excess of 1,606,000 cubic feet of records. Requiring an application to track the physical location of approximately 1.4 million containers at these two locations, NARA's MLR is the major application for the management and physical control of the textual records in the two buildings.
Working together, Open Text and Impact Innovations, a leading provider of IT support and management, built on the functionality of Livelink to address NARA's specific database and legacy requirements. "NARA required very powerful search and retrieval functionality and we're pleased with the Livelink application," said John Evans, Senior Technical Leader, Impact Innovations Group. "We were able to successfully tailor the Livelink product to enable our client to more effectively plan and manage the physical movement of the millions of records for which they are responsible."
Following a request for information, NARA archivists will be able to use the MLR to quickly search for the physical location of the relevant resource and determine physical space usage to plan and manage the physical movement of records.
"Combining Livelink's robust functionality with Impact Innovations' expertise with government clients, we have been able to create a key application for NARA to enhance the organization's effectiveness and simplify its search processes," said Mike Farrell, Executive Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing, Open Text. "As federal and government agencies strive to cut costs and improve efficiency, more and more federal and government agencies are realizing the value on investment that Livelink delivers."
