Open Text to Team With Adobe on Integration Development for Advanced Document Collaboration in Livelink

Solutions Aimed at Companies in Life Sciences, Other Regulated Industries, Offers Multiple Parallel Reviews of Adobe PDF Files, and Document Controls

Chicago, IL - 2002-11-07 - Open Text Corporation (Nasdaq: OTEX, TSX: OTC), provider of Livelink®, the leading collaboration and knowledge management software for the global enterprise, said today it is working with Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE), the leader in network publishing, to develop advanced document collaboration features for Adobe® Portable Document Format (PDF) files used in Livelink. The new capabilities will be aimed at companies in Life Sciences and other regulated industries, where there is growing demand for solutions to manage the review and use of critical legal and regulatory documents.

Open Text announced the plans to Livelink customers at Live LinkUp 2002, Open Text's annual user conference held this week in Chicago. To offer the new capabilities, the companies will develop an integration between Open Text s Livelink software suite, and Adobe Acrobat and Adobe PDF technology. The integration will provide a comprehensive platform for exchanging and collaborating on Adobe PDF documents, integrated with document and knowledge management features in Livelink. Adobe PDF is widely used in large companies to ensure that documents can t be changed when in circulation in an organization. Adobe PDF has become the standard for review and annotation of legal, regulatory or other important documents.

The integration between Livelink, Acrobat and Adobe PDF will offer a complete process for effectively managing multiple, parallel reviews of a document. This will allow many people to concurrently review an un-modifiable Adobe PDF version of a document and add their comments. Each set of comments is then kept in a new file, separate from the original. The comments can then be reviewed and consolidated by editors, who are the only ones with access to the original. The integration will also provide robust controls to guard against the misuse of documents.

Life sciences will be an important market for the new integration because of tough U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations on managing electronic documents. In order to meet FDA requirements for a new drug submission, for example, life sciences companies have to carefully manage lengthy document reviews that can involve hundreds of contributors. A mistake can delay the approval of a new drug.

"When it comes to document collaboration, the stakes are very high for many large organizations," said Bill Forquer, Senior Vice President of Business Development at Open Text. "By working with Adobe, we can offer a platform that provides the scalability, functionality and controls companies need to accommodate any number of users. Customers will be able to more effectively manage document collaboration, reduce the risk of error and even deliver products to market faster."

"Businesses worldwide recognize the many advantages of Acrobat and Adobe PDF for document-intensive workflows, and the same can be said for Open Text s Livelink," said Ivan Koon, Senior Vice President, ePaper Business Unit, Adobe. "By working together to combine the best of Livelink, Acrobat and Adobe PDF, Open Text and Adobe will deliver customers a compelling document collaboration solution based on leading and widely accepted technologies."
