Multiple Classifications Automatically Bring Structure to Unstructured Data Lets Companies Import or Export Classifications Using XML Files
Chicago, IL - 2002-07-09 - Open Text Corporation (Nasdaq: OTEX, TSX: OTC), provider of Livelink®, the leading collaboration and knowledge management software for the global enterprise, today introduced Livelink Classifications to help companies get a handle on vast repositories of content, improve knowledge management and speed information retrieval.
With Livelink Classifications, companies can apply structure to unstructured content by assigning classifications either automatically, semi-automatically or manually. Classification librarians can assign multiple classifications to a single item and users can assign classifications to documents they own, all without duplicating data. This allows content to be structured in ways that fit a user's perspective on the information, so a business case for a new product, for example, can be classified in two ways to fit the different perspectives of a product engineer and a marketing manager.
"A key part of successful knowledge management is making huge volumes of company information relevant to different types of professionals by putting it into contexts they are familiar with," said Anik Ganguly, executive vice president for products at Open Text. "The growing repositories of unstructured content, such as documents and presentations, are at the heart of that challenge. Livelink Classifications improves the way this content is organized, and makes it easy for users to find what they need, because information can be classified in many ways to fit the different perspectives of many users."
Livelink Classifications is the only solution that gives users the choice of assigning classifications automatically, manually or semi-automatically in which users are given an opportunity to confirm or reject an automatic classification. Livelink Classifications also lets users assign records management classifications to documents that must be retained and managed according to specific records management policies.
In support of open, standards-based integration, Livelink Classifications also supports the ability to import and export classification hierarchies from other repositories using XML files. This allows users to adopt any existing classifications, such as standard classifications for their industry, or export the classifications they've developed in Livelink to other systems.
As information is classified, users can browse in structured classification trees, and in multiple classifications simultaneously, to quickly retrieve the information they need. Users can also search classifications in Livelink Search or perform "from here" searches within branches of classification trees.
