Siemens Goes Live with Open Text and SAP Integration for Collaborative Process Automation, Described in IDC Study
Collaboration and Knowledge Management Integrated Into Back-Office Systems
Chicago, IL - 2002-06-11 - Open Text Corporation(TM) (Nasdaq: OTEX, TSX: OTC), provider of Livelink®, the leading collaboration and knowledge management software for the global enterprise, today announced the availability of an IDC study that describes Siemens' new initiative called The Nexus Project-an integration of Open Text's Livelink® with SAP R/3®, utilizing the workflow toolsets of Livelink to automate and tie processes into the SAP backend system. The first of many planned applications for operations productivity, The Nexus Project is a set of office applications, such as travel expense claims, leave management, recruitment, and training management, that are developed on Livelink platform for collaborative work processes and integrated with SAP R/3 for the supporting business transactions. Upon the launch of Nexus, Siemens gained a rapid return on investment because numerous processes were truly sped up and costs were stripped out. The Nexus project paid for itself in six months.

IDC's investigation confirmed that Livelink is the chosen standard platform for document management and project collaboration within Siemens. Additionally, in the Asia Australia region, the workflow features of Livelink are successfully used for office process automation. The simplicity of developing process workflows, excellent track and trace functionality and seamless interface to the business systems like SAP R/3 are some of the reasons for selection of Livelink as a platform for office process automation.
"We did not seriously consider any other options," said Jan Dressel, CIO Asia Pacific & Australia, Siemens. "It was intuitive from the very beginning to use Livelink and R/3 together, with forms and workflows on Livelink and data in R/3. It is my opinion the right approach for accruing and sustaining the benefits for employees as well as the organization."
Siemens intends to standardize these business processes across the entire Asia Pacific region. Siemens Business Services provided the technical integration and support for both Livelink and SAP R/3 for this project using standard programming interfaces provided by both products. Both Livelink and SAP R/3 are used predominantly throughout the Siemens organization.
"Siemens consistently demonstrates its leadership as a knowledge management practitioner," said John Shackleton, President, Open Text. "We will continue to provide the requisite open interfaces in our products for our customers, like Siemens, so they may achieve the full benefit of automating their collaborative business processes."
"Any company having similar requirements to Siemens could benefit from integrating the collaborative work processes of Livelink to their back-office systems, such as SAP R/3," added Mr. Dressel. "The opportunities for efficiency gains through cost-reduction and cost-avoidance are plentiful."
