Open Text Launches New Livelink for Knowledge Management

New Livelink Release Offers Lowest Total Cost of Ownership for End-to-End Collaborative Knowledge Management

Las Vegas, NV - 2001-11-06 - Open Text Corporation (Nasdaq: OTEX, TSE: OTC), a worldwide leader in delivering collaborative commerce solutions, today unveiled Livelink® 9.1, the newest version of its collaborative knowledge management platform. Open Text is showcasing Livelink 9.1 enhancements to its global install base of users from many different industries who are gathering this week in Las Vegas for LiveLinkUp 2001, the Company s annual user conference.

"With this new version, Open Text delivers innovative enhancements that enable our customers to realize even greater return on their investment in Livelink," said John Shackleton, President of Open Text. "Livelink offers the lowest total cost of ownership for an end-to-end knowledge management platform, supporting collaborative business applications that drive increased productivity and efficiency."

According to Richard Medina, principal analyst at Doculabs, Inc., an industry analyst and consulting firm, "Open Text's release of Livelink 9.1 advances its strategy to help organizations effectively add real business value to their previous Livelink investment in online collaboration and knowledge management. Key enhancements designed to improve productivity and efficiency can help generate significantly improved levels of return on an organization's intellectual capital."

Significant new features that complement Livelink's Web-based, collaborative functionality include:

Knowledge Management enhancements

"We are very excited about rolling out Livelink 9.1 to our users, especially given the enhancements to search," said Judy Regan, GIS - Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions, Motorola. "With over 2.5 million objects in our library, the use of natural language, result themes, and 'find similar' will vastly improve our ability to quickly narrow a result set to those specific items we want."

A variety of additional enhancements have been built into Livelink 9.1 to further extend an organization's end-to-end knowledge strategy, such as:

  • Advanced search and retrieval such as natural language query, content only search, multiple search templates, hit highlighting, 'find similar' and result themes enables users to not only locate explicit knowledge easily, but also to discover the context and find the experts who contribute the knowledge
  • Personalized user profiles add support for photos, Websites, interests, and more enables users to locate the people in the organization who have special expertise and tap into their implicit knowledge
  • XML import allows data to be moved quickly between Livelink systems
  • Sophisticated collaborative features for driving innovation, including online polling; milestone tracking; and separate user group domains for online projects, extranets and joint ventures attracts more users to the system, thereby increasing its value to the organization

Livelink for Microsoft's webFolders (WebDAV)

"Cultural acceptance is often the greatest barrier to implementing a successful knowledge management system. Livelink WebDAV is critical to overcoming this barrier at Volvo Cars,' said Roger Aspelin, IT, Volvo Cars. "By using WebDAV, every employee can easily share the information they manage with the organization, simply by using the same tools they use every day."

Livelink WebDAV adds support for WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) protocol to Livelink. A set of enhancements to the HTTP protocol, WebDAV makes it possible for users to collaboratively edit and manage files stored on remote web servers, such as Livelink, as easily as if they were stored on a local file server. Using Livelink WebDAV Server, Livelink users can create, move, copy, and delete documents and folders, check-out document, and view Livelink folder contents directly from desktop applications such as Microsoft webFolders (enables drag and drop between desktop and Livelink repository), Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat and more.

Brokered Search for searching the enterprise

Brokered Search release 1.5 enables users to search multiple Livelink repositories and external information sources using a single query. Unlike other meta-search tools, Livelink Brokered Search allows authenticated, secure, and personalized searching of multiple repositories through multiple search engines. In addition to the ability to use any Web-based search engine, its extensible architecture enables it to search document repositories from other vendors, as well as subscription-based information services simultaneously. This provides a tremendous boost to users who need to quickly locate information that may reside in any available repository.

Features such as hit highlighting, summaries, and 'find similar', help users interpret and act on search results more easily, regardless of their source. In response to customer demand for this capability in all enterprise applications, this version can be incorporated in any Web-based application via a simple, embeddable HTML interface.

Livelink 9.1 offers enhancements to more than 4,500 enterprise customers that are already using Open Text's platform to improve collaboration among employees, partners and suppliers, and to better leverage intellectual capital. Spanning a wide range of industries, these customers include AFLAC, Pfizer Inc., Motorola and Shell Oil.

Combined with ongoing support for wireless handheld devices, Livelink 9.1 continues to be recognized as one of the most comprehensive out-of-the-box collaborative knowledge management solutions available on the market.
