Open Text Announces Availability of Livelink Personal Knowledge Discovery Package

Product offering enables the enterprise to discover and react to new information rapidly to gain competitive advantage

Waterloo, ON - 2001-10-04 - Open Text Corporation (Nasdaq: OTEX, TSE: OTC), a worldwide leader in delivering collaborative commerce solutions, today announced the availability of the Livelink Personal Knowledge Discovery package. Open Text's newest Livelink product package provides a means for enterprises to gain competitive advantage by enabling individual knowledge workers to be proactive in their search for business-critical information.

In today's knowledge economy, the considerable amounts of new information that individual knowledge workers must process can be overwhelming, often causing them to spend vast amounts of time trying to find the information they need. The Livelink Personal Knowledge Discovery package is a proactive, online search and retrieval package that reduces the amount of time required for locating key data.

By scanning information inflows on behalf of individual knowledge workers, the Livelink Personal Knowledge Discovery package integrates Livelink technologies to provide knowledge workers with immediate access to new information that is critical to their roles in the organization. The package allows individuals to set up automated tools to scan a variety of information sources and immediately advise them when these sources have been updated with critical information.

Some of the features of the Livelink Personal Knowledge Discovery package include:

  • dynamic indexing of new information as it is added to the Livelink repository,
  • Personal Knowledge Discoverers can be configured to scan any of the information streams that Livelink indexes,
  • Livelink s Web crawling engine and indexing capabilities can continuously scan and index business-critical information on secure or public Web pages located on an intranet, an extranet, or the Internet,
  • Personalization and customization individual knowledge workers can define personal search queries that act as Personal Knowledge Discoverers by alerting them of content that is of interest in their organizational roles,
  • e-mail notification of the existence and location of pages or documents that match personal search queries,
  • the Livelink Personal Knowledge Discovery package dramatically reduces the delay between the publication of business-critical knowledge and its discovery and use by people who need it. As a result, individual knowledge workers are able to work more efficiently, prevent costly mistakes and react quickly to seize new opportunities,

"In 1999, IDC estimated that the cost to enterprises from intellectual rework, substandard performance, and inability to find knowledge resources was $5,000 per worker per year. A staggering amount," said Susan Feldman, Director of IDC s Document and Content Technologies program. "IDC called this the 'knowledge deficit'. Employees typically spend anywhere from 15% to 35% of their time just looking for information. Of their actual working time, studies have shown that they spend more time re-creating existing work than they do creating original materials. We also know that good, targeted delivery of timely information can help to manage the information overload that most knowledge workers are bearing. Products like Open Text's Personal Knowledge Discovery package can alert employees to significant information without drowning them in too much information."

"The ability to push new information to knowledge workers in real time based on criteria that they can personalize is a key element in enhancing individual awareness, productivity and the overall effectiveness of the enterprise," said Andrew Pery, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing, Open Text. "This new product offering reduces the amount of time it takes for enterprises to respond to changing market conditions, providing a competitive advantage and substantial business benefits."
