Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Chooses Open Text To Enable Collaborative Research Extranet

Seven Boston health institutes use Livelink to help build new research enterprise

Chicago, IL - 1999-06-21 - Open Text Corporation (NASDAQ:OTEX, TSE:OTC), the worldwide leader of Web-based collaborative knowledge management software, today announced that the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts is deploying Livelink® to manage an extranet that links scientists and physicians at Harvard-affiliated medical facilities in the Boston area. Dana-Farber is also deploying Livelink to manage their intranet to improve the institute's administrative efficiency and flow of information.

"We are currently experiencing a time of great change in health care and we must look for collaborations to maximize our resources in the fight against cancer," said Steven Singer, Chief of Communications for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. "By enabling knowledge sharing both internally and between different medical institutions, Livelink is facilitating a new model of cancer research that will help focus and coordinate our efforts."

The cancer research extranet will provide an information sharing platform for the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, a new collaboration among the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the Harvard Medical School, the Harvard School of Public Health, Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Children's Hospital Medical Center and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Livelink will make it possible for scientists and physicians at these institutions to share research documents, participate in online workgroup discussions, and maximize existing lab resources.

"Time constraints and differing schedules make coordinating meetings and sharing information between researchers and physicians from so many separate facilities almost impossible," said Singer. "With the deployment of Livelink, researchers will be empowered to collaborate at their own convenience in a secure Web-based environment, regardless of time of day. This platform will help get more from our core resources and facilities, enabling each group to reduce delays and allowing scientists and physicians to better concentrate their research energies."

"The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's use of Livelink to manage its extranet deployment demonstrates how a strong knowledge management strategy will enable healthcare facilities to leverage existing resources and reduce costs while improving the quality of research," said Dan Latendre, Vice President, Product Marketing, Open Text Corporation. "Easy access to information and simplified collaboration is helping these scientists and physicians overcome cost and time restraints, accelerating the pace of innovation and hopefully, contributing to a breakthrough in cancer research."
